Any good personal development plan will involve learning how to set goals. Did you set some smart goals this year? No, I mean SMART goals – yes, there is a difference! Anyone can set goals that seem “smart” at the time – they are well thought out and considered, or they are the same goals that the person has set before but not accomplished yet. Like the person who just reuses the same “New Year’s Resolutions” list year after year, with just changing the year at the top – those kinds of goals are never achieved.

Only SMART goals follow the SMART plan. Confused? Let’s fix that. SMART is an acronym to help one set goals. SMART helps goal setting be effective and productive. Let’s take a good look at the SMART acronym.

S – Specific

Goals, to be effective, must be specific. A wishy-washy goal of “I want to lose weight” will get you nowhere! So tomorrow, when you step on the scales, if you’ve gone down two ounces, the goal is accomplished, right? Let’s hope not! What happens after lunch, when the scale shows at least those two ounces back in your body?

“I will be friendlier” means little unless accompanied by more information – “I will have ten new friends that I talk to on a weekly basis by the end of the year” is much stronger. SMART goal setting means that your goals are specific.

M – Measurable

Your goals need to be measurable. To use our weight loss example again, how much do you want to lose? And by when? How will you know when the goal is reached? By scale weight? Or by tape measured inches? These specifics should be included when setting SMART goals.

A – Achievable

Setting goals the SMART way means that your goals are achievable. It’s all well and good to want some tremendous, fabulous, goal, but it needs to be something you can actually achieve. While you might want to lose 20 pounds this month, it really isn’t realistic – or even healthy. Take a look at the limits of your time and your health when you do your SMART goal setting, and have your goals be Achievable.

R – Realistic

SMART goal setting includes having your goals be realistic. Your goals need to be something that you are willing and able to work towards. While losing ten pounds a month might be achievable, it may also take more work than you are willing to commit. You need to be realistic about what you want and what you are able to do when you set your goals.

T – Timely

Goals that are set the SMART way are timely. This means that there is a deadline to them. Goals need to be a closed-end process, so that there is a time when you can say, “Yes, that goal is achieved.” Then you can move on to your next SMART goal for that aspect in your life.

Many people do not realize just how important goal setting important really is, especially when used in conjunction with a good planning system like the Franklin Cover Plan Plus. There is almost nothing more important than goal setting for yourself, because you need to have goals set for yourself so that you have things to look forward to and try to achieve to, so that you have something to look forward to and work towards.

There are many different things that you could set as goals in your life, and it really all depends on what it is that you want to do in your life. For instance maybe you want to become a pilot, and so you should start off by setting a goal that you go with a pilot for a flight, and then have your next goal be to learn how to fly, and then after that have a goal of flying a plane on your own.

If you want to learn more about why is goal setting important, there are a few tips that you will want to take into consideration here, and which will be discussed in more detail for you here.

The Benefits

More than anything you need to think about the benefits offered when it comes to why goal setting is important. You will feel so good about yourself once you achieve the goals that you set for yourself, and will not only make yourself proud but as well all of the people in your life who care about you.

Just make sure that you set realistic goals for yourself. You don’t want to aim too high at first, because then if you do not make it to your goal you will become frustrated and disappointed in yourself.

Also on the topic of why is goal setting important, if you really wanted to learn more, a great thing that you could do for yourself is go and listen to a motivational speaker. These are people who are positive thinkers and who want to get you on the same track and start working towards things in your life.

Life is too short to not fulfill your wishes and dreams, and so setting goals is something that you will want to start doing right away if you do not already. Whether you start off small or shoot for the sky, the most important thing is that you realize why is goal setting so important and make it a major part of your own life.

Maybe this will be the year that you vow to learn once and for all how to build self confidence and finally start feeling better about yourself. It’s that time of year again! Everyone seems to be setting goals – whether they are just the same old “gonna lose 20 pounds” kind or the “gonna go on a trip around the world” kind, unless you reevaluate the way you set and work toward your goals, you’ll have the same result as usual – nothing new, nothing special, and the goal abandoned or forgotten within a month. How can you have something different happen this time? Here are some important tips for goal setting. Let them help you!

Identify Specific Lifetime Goals

The first tip for effective goal setting is to figure out what matters to you. What are key issues, things you feel are really important in your life? Is it your family? Your education? Traveling? Your dog? Then set some lifetime goals about those things. I know, you just want to lose those extra pounds, but trust me – they’ll come off easier if you follow these tips for goal setting. So, what is important to you? Your health? Is that way you want to lose the twenty pounds? Then write a statement about your health. And whatever else you value. These will probably look like a “mission statement”, and (for our purposes) they are called your “lifetime goals.”

Intermediate Goals – Both Long And Short Term

Next is to identify goals for the next few years that are logical steps to your lifetime goals. These goals will also reflect your values, since they are based on your lifetime goals. This tip for goal setting can help you keep those goals in alignment with your true values.

These should be both long and short term goals. A long-term goal is usually said to be from three to ten years. A short-term goal is usually from six months to three years.

Activities Will Get You There

Finally, you need to set some activities that will get you to each specific short-term goal. They should be written down, with certain characteristics: relate directly to the goal (accomplishing an increment of it); be very specific, very detailed; have a date, time and place to be done; repetitive, carried out either daily or weekly. Less often than weekly, it won’t lead to an attitude change and reaching your stated goal.

This goal setting tip is critical, so take a look at the activities you have in your life – do they lead you toward accomplishing a short-term goal you’ve set?

If you are reading anything by Brian Tracy, you’ll learn that having goals is a bit part of being successful. The fact is that goal setting actually does work. Goals give you a target to aim for in life, a reason for being. They can help you to focus, and to concentrate your time and effort. One important reason that goal setters achieve get what they want is because they are focused on one thing at a time and are willing to work hard towards it.

Most people want to start setting goals for themselves, but are just not sure how to go about it and how to do it. Well, to help you get started, you should learn about some good examples of goal setting. First and foremost you need to know that when you are just getting started with goal setting, you want to ensure more than anything that you start off small.

Although you certainly want to reach for the sky, you want to start off with goals that are realistic, so that you can actually achieve them, and then feel great about yourself and start trying to achieve higher goals.

Examples of Goal Setting

When you want to start goal setting, the best thing that you can do is look at some examples of goal setting. One great example of goal setting would be if you were a smoker and you decided to quit in a month. This is something that you can definitely work towards and that you can achieve if you really want to.

If you have a partner and they smoke as well, you can work with them and both quit at the same time. This way you will be able to support each other and really have someone there to back you up and make sure that you are sticking to your goal.

Another of the best examples of goal setting would be if you wanted to buy a house, but did not think that this was an achievable goal. Just set it for a year or so from the date, and then make sure that you are saving money and taking the other important steps towards ensuring that you will have the money and be ready to go through and actually buy your first home.

Remember, you can listen to all the examples of goal setting that you want, but it may not apply to your life. You need to make sure that you know what you want to do in your life before you die, the different goals that you would like to achieve, and then work towards them.

If you are following a program such as the Success Mastery Academy by Brian Tracy, chances are that you will be very inspired to set some great goals for yourself.

If you plan to set goals, you would probably like to see an example of a goal setting form. While there are probably many examples in books and on the Internet, you don’t really need to find someone else’s form to look at – you can make your own.

Elements On Your Form

Think about the elements that should be in your example of a goal setting form. You need a place to write the goals, but unless you are just going to make a basic list, you probably want more on your form than that. Maybe you want to identify your values first, so that your long-term and short-term goals tie in with your values. If that’s what you’re doing, you’ll want your example of a goal setting form to have with places to write your values. Next to your values, you’ll want space for those long and short range goals, which relate to the values they are next to. Then you will want space next to the goals to put the activities that will help you achieve that particular short or long range goal.

If, on the other hand, you are writing your goals using the “SMART” method, you may want a listing of the SMART acronym on the example of a goal setting form you use. It would spell out that all goals should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. Seeing those when you write your goals can help you create goals that have a greater likelihood of being achieved.

If you are organizing your goals based on categories of life, like “physical,” “spiritual,” “intellectual,” and “financial,” then you probably want those categories heading the sections with the pertinent goals beneath them. Many people organize their goals this way. Whichever way you elect to organize your example of a goal setting form, the most important thing is that it works for you.

Where To Create It?

Most people would make their example of a goal setting form on a piece of scratch paper to begin with, but don’t discount the value of using a computer. A spreadsheet program can create a table, which can work really well for keeping your goals organized. When putting your form on the computer, you have the option of either using it solely on the computer, filling in the information on the computer and only referring to it there, or just creating the example of the goal setting form on the computer, then printing it out to use wherever you’d like to work on creating your goals.

Depending upon which theory you follow when goal setting and creating your own personal development plan, the way you set goals will vary. Some people prefer to just write down a list of things they want to do, but usually that ends up looking more like a to-do list. Though it might look like an impressive list, it isn’t exactly a goal list at all. Goals are tied in to values, and/or domains of your life. Let’s take an in-depth look at the theory of goal setting where you look at the portions of your life.

Domain Method

One theory behind goal setting is to take a look at the various domains of your life. Spiritual, Intellectual, Financial, and Physical are examples of domains. With this theory of goal setting, you take a look at how you are doing in each domain. How are you, physically? What things of your physical life need addressing? Perhaps you need to stop smoking, or lose fifty pounds. Maybe you’ve got a mole that’s been changing in some “interesting” ways.

Once you’ve identified how you are doing in each domain and written the information down, following this goal setting theory you can write down what you’d like to change. Finally lose the weight. Or go back to church. Or save money for a vacation…Whatever it is you’d like to accomplish to make that part of your life better.

The next step with this theory of goal setting is to identify the obstacles that are in the way of you accomplishing what you say you want to accomplish. Is it getting up to eat ice cream (2 big bowls) in the middle of the night? Or the fact that you have ten tv shows you just can’t skip? Then think of ways to get over those obstacles. Maybe you can only buy one quart of ice cream a week, and when it’s gone, it’s gone – which would be cutting down on ice cream consumption. Or maybe it is to tape your TV shows so you can watch them faster, without commercials – freeing up more time to do other things that are important.

After identifying obstacles and ways beyond them, the final step is to identify the activities that will get you to the goal. Perhaps it is going for a walk every evening, right after dinner while the dishwasher runs. Maybe it is to sign up with a weight loss company and have their help to lose those pounds. Whatever the activities, that’s a critical part of this theory of goal setting.

Do you have visions of a perfect day at work? Whether you work in the corporate environment or out of your home office, it is so easy these days to lose focus with your goals, tasks and to-do lists. In this article, we will provide some tips for planning that productive day that eludes you. We will also discuss a specific planning tool called the Franklin Covey Plan Plus software. For the purposes of this article, we will assume that you work from home as this can actually be the most difficult to overcome when it comes to sticking to a plan.

What do you do when you first sit down to begin your work day? Many people check their e-mail first thing in the morning and this can be a potential time suck if you do not have a clear plan for tackling your inbox. If you do choose to check your email first thing in the morning you should get in the habit of allowing yourself only a certain amount of time to do so as this task alone can really derail your morning.

Here are some tips for effectively sorting through your email. Set a timer for 15-20 minutes or whatever time you need to allow so that the morning does not get away from you all due to e-mail. Skim subject lines and immediately delete spam and non-important e-mails. Utilize a labeling or folder system for e-mail organization and immediately put them into the correct labels and folders for ease of use later in the day. If you are using the Franklin PlanPlus, one very cool feature is the ability to turn e-mails into daily tasks simply by dragging them to your task tab within the software.

We actually recommend that you refrain from checking e-mail first thing in the morning. Instead, the most effective use of your time would be to sit down with your cup of coffee and plan your day. To be most effective with this task, you would also have a plan for the month and week at your disposal so that you can easily track your progress towards specific goals and targets for the month, week and day. This overall plan, of course, is what will have you on track for a successful year and your long-term goals and vision.

Planning is essential for success when it comes to running your home business. Successful people have this in common and they know that in order to achieve goals, they must first be able to envision an outcome of what that success will look like. There are many planning tools to help you to get from where you are now to a day projected into the future. All of the FranklinCovey books, planners and programs are very popular and effective in helping people with this type of organization. The FranklinCovey PlanPlus is no exception and if you are currently using a paper system for planning and Outlook for your e-mail system, this is the perfect integration of the two for you.

Here’s to your successful planning and many productive days ahead!

Do you suffer with low self esteem and worry that you will never learn how to build self confidence to be able to succeed in life? It may be surprising to know that confidence is actually something that can be learned. Certainly your environment and the way in which you were raised as a child does play a part in how you see yourself as an adult, but there are many methods that you can do to help alleviate and replace negative thinking in your life

The Brian Tracy Science of Self Confidence audio program is one tool that can help you to jumpstart your transformation to becoming the confident person that you deserve to be. Whether you are trying to gain confidence to be able to seek out that new job, woman, opportunity or any variety of reasons, gathering tools and support is your first step in that journey.

It is very important to fill your mind and day-to-day thoughts with positive imagery, attitudes and affirmations. When you are constantly overwhelmed with negative thinking and every possible outcome of a situation is imagined in the worst possible light, it can be difficult to rise above your current circumstances to create a new way of being.

One tip that you could incorporate right away, is to imagine someone in your life or someone that you know of who is the perfect example of a person that you would think of as self confident. Examine their actions and words and try very hard to simple duplicate these things in your own life. It can be true what they say about faking it until you make it in some regards. Simply by acting more confident, people will react differently to you and this will in turn make you feel better about yourself.

The Science of Self Confidence is all about transforming your life by starting within yourself. If you do not have a good sense of who you are and your own self worth, it can be difficult to find true success and happiness in almost every area of your life. On the other hand, once you do start to develop self confidence, you will notice positive changes in nearly every facet of your life. Money, people and opportunities will seem to be attracted to you. Confidence and self esteem really do play a huge role in the decisions that you make as you go throughout your life.

An important thing to note is that no matter how you are currently feeling, it IS just a feeling. You can be in control of your thought life and more in control of your feelings as a results of changing negative thoughts to positive thinking.

Many people hire professional coaching services today to help them navigate life, work and business. In this article, we will discuss some of the many benefits that you can expect from such a service and give examples from the popular Brian Tracy coaching program, Focal Point Personal Telecoaching.

This is a program which consists of one-on-one work and accountability with a personal coach. The coach is a highly trained professional business consultant that has completed very thorough training and support from Brian Tracy’s Focal Point Business Coaching, one of the world’s best coaching organizations.

Here are just some of the many things that personal business performance coaching can help you with.

Coaching can help you to increase your current income. Are you satisfied with your current salary and the amount of time available to you to take off from work? Maybe you are already working for yourself and you need some help organizing your business plan, goals and profit targets. A personal coach can play a big role when it comes to achieving confidence in this area of your life allowing you to grow your finances in ways that you never imagined to be possible.

Are you someone that suffers with a lack of organization? Many people utilize a coaching service to help them to gain clarity and focus in their lives. If your physical space is cluttered and disorganized, you cannot expect that your brain will be able to operate at 100 percent capacity. Becoming organized is a huge step forward on your path to success regardless of what that path might be.

A personal coach can help you to pinpoint and develop your specific strengths. This is critical to success in that if your know those things that you personally excel at you can focus on developing them to their full capacity. On the other hand, it is important to acknowledge areas where you are more weak and less comfortable so that you will not be focusing too much attention on the things that will not allow you to grow. For example, if business growth is what you want to succeed at, you’d be better off to outsource those things that cause you grief and are not as easy or enjoyable for you to do.

Do you need help with your personal strategic plan or business plan? A coach can help guide you through this process and it can be the single most important thing that you do that will help you to gain clarity about what it is you really want in life. This is important for both your personal and career path so that you have a very good sense of direction and knowledge of your overall purpose in life.

The last item we will cover is that of goal setting. We all know that setting goals and having targets are very important to achieving true success in all areas of life, but few people actually know how to correctly set and implement goal setting. The Brian Tracy Focal Point team is very knowledgeable in this area and will be able to give many suggestions and techniques for setting effective goals.

We hope that this gives you a good idea of some of the benefits of hiring a personal coach or taking part in the specific program mentioned above. There are many options out there for hiring a life coach or taking part in an extensive training coaching program such as this. Regardless of what you choose to do, you are sure to find yourself on the way to a very successful life.

One of the best things you can do for success in life is to create your own personal development plan. This plan might include goals and targets that you’d like to aim for as well as things that you would like to learn and habits you might like to break. We are all constantly evolving and growing as individuals and this idea should really excite us. There is nothing worse than feeling uninspired and unmotivated in your day-to-day life and creating a consistent action plan with goals for change can help to assure that your life will be anything other than boring.

There are many basic areas of improvement that one may wish to focus on at any given time. Some people like to pick one big goal from each area and others may like to just focus on one particular area for a length of time. In general, you may want to consider breaking your goals up into those that are spiritual, physical, social and mental to get you started.

Within the realm of spiritual development or goals of this nature, you may for example have a goal of finding a new church or even a new religion that you feel comfortable with. You might decide to read a certain number of books each month that are of a spiritual nature. Other ideas for common spiritual goals might include learning to meditate or practicing meditation every day, beginning and keeping a journal on a regular basis or even giving up a certain bad habit that you feel is detrimental to your spiritual path.

Common physical goals might include losing a certain number of pounds, training and running for a marathon or regularly attending the gym that you never seem to make it to. Feeling good physically can help you to feel great in a multitude of other areas of your life, so for this reason this is often a good area to tackle first if you feel that it could use some revision.

If you feel that you need to branch out and meet more people or that your social life is lacking altogether, making a plan of action can be the first step to what will become a very fun process for you. There are so many ways to meet new people these days that it has become very easy. Starting online is a great option. If it’s a date that you are seeking, you might try some of the popular online dating sites. If you are interested in meeting people with like minded interests, try Meet-Up online to find groups of people that are meeting to discuss and take part in various hobbies.

Finally our last example is to tackle the mental category of your life. This might include learning something completely new, finishing up your degree or reading the classics of literature over your summer vacation. Explore your local community college to see what kind of classes might be offered that would allow you to advance your skills and interests.

Regardless of what you choose to focus on first, the most important thing is that you are someone that is determined to grow, learn and evolve over the course of your lifetime. Having that plan can make all the difference.
